Connecting the Rhine-Main Region – Regionaltangente West

As one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Rhine-Main region in Germany, the Regionaltangente West (RTW) is creating new direct rail connections in western Frankfurt and beyond, strengthening regional mobility while also helping to ease congestion at Frankfurt Central Station.

New Connections for the Rhine-Main Region

Getting from one side of the Rhine-Main region to the other often means travelling through Frankfurt Central Station — even when your destination is nowhere near the city centre.

The Regionaltangente West (RTW) is set to change that. As one of the region's most ambitious transport projects, the new orbital rail line will connect communities, business hubs and transport interchanges across the western Frankfurt region, making travel faster, more direct and more convenient. At the same time, it will help relieve congestion at Frankfurt Central Station and the heavily used City Tunnel.

By creating new connections, the RTW is laying the foundation for a more connected, efficient and sustainable transport network for the Rhine-Main region.

Supporting One of the Region's Landmark Infrastructure Projects

CDM Smith is contributing to the successful delivery of the RTW as part of various engineering consortia with DB Engineering & Consulting, Schüßler-Plan and BPB. Our teams provide construction supervision and specialist consulting services across a range of disciplines, helping to keep this complex project moving safely, efficiently and sustainably.

Protecting the Environment Every Step of the Way

As environmental construction supervisors, we ensure that environmental requirements are fully integrated throughout construction, with a focus on ecological protection, species conservation and water resources.

Putting Health and Safety First

In our role as Safety and Health Coordinator (German: SiGeKo), we oversee compliance with health and safety requirements and support safe working conditions across the construction site.

Making Construction More Efficient

Through Lean Site Management, we promote transparent processes, clear communication and efficient site operations that help keep activities on track.

Building on Existing Infrastructure

A key sustainability aspect of the RTW is its use of existing rail corridors wherever possible. By building on established infrastructure, the project reduces land consumption and minimises impacts on the surrounding environment.

"It's incredibly rewarding to be part of a project that delivers real benefits to so many people and will have a lasting impact on mobility across the region."

Dr Heiko Huber, Senior Project Manager
