Sustainably Renewing Historic Infrastructure

Würzburg State Building Authority (German: Staatliches Bauamt Würzburg) has commissioned CDM Smith to restore the sewer network at Würzburg Residence. The planning approach brings together heritage conservation and the operational requirements of a museum, event venue and administrative site. CDM Smith is coordinating the planning services, structuring the works into prioritised construction phases and developing solutions that minimise interventions in the historic fabric and reduce disruption to ongoing operations.

Protecting Historic Sewers with Heritage-Sensitive Solutions

The historic masonry sewers are being repaired with particular care. The planning and technical solutions take account of the centuries-old building fabric and the requirements of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Modernising Supply and Disposal Infrastructure

The project covers the restoration of sewage disposal and water supply systems, the renewal of fountain technology, the use of perched groundwater and structural adaptations within the existing building fabric

Reusing Service Water Sustainably

CDM Smith is developing a concept to enable some of the pumped water to be used in the gardens or reused externally in future. This helps conserve resources while making practical use of existing infrastructure.

Coordinating Works Around Ongoing Operations

Prioritised construction sections, precise phasing and logistics planning, and early coordination with stakeholders are designed to take account of visitor flows, routing and sensitive time windows.

Where Heritage Protection Meets Modern Infrastructure

The restoration affects key areas of Würzburg Residence. Works on Residenzplatz and in the northern and southern courtyards are particularly time-critical. In addition to restoring the sewer network, CDM Smith is providing structural engineering for the sewers and landscape design services for the Court Garden. Modern requirements, including a sustainable irrigation system and the reactivation of existing storage structures, are being combined with the protection of the historic fabric. The works will be delivered in several construction phases, staggered over time or carried out in parallel depending on urgency. The aim is to create an economical, durable and technically sustainable concept that minimises disruption to ongoing museum, event and administrative operations.
