Updated Preliminary Design
CDM Smith is reviewing and updating the existing demolition plans for the taxiway bridge and apron areas, ensuring that the site is optimally prepared for the construction of the new access roads.
Following the closure of Tegel Airport, the Urban Tech Republic and the Schumacher Quartier are being developed on the former airport site. As part of the first phase of development, the taxiway bridge and large sections of the apron are being demolished.
CDM Smith is responsible for revising and updating the design and planning documents, preparing a recycling concept for the demolition waste in support of the targeted Platinum certification, and delivering the detailed design. In addition, CDM Smith oversees the tendering process and provides construction supervision for the demolition works.
CDM Smith is reviewing and updating the existing demolition plans for the taxiway bridge and apron areas, ensuring that the site is optimally prepared for the construction of the new access roads.
To support the targeted Platinum certification, CDM Smith is developing a recycling concept that maximises material recovery and promotes resource-efficient demolition and disposal practices.
The project involves the demolition of the taxiway bridge, including approximately 14,300 m³ of reinforced concrete, 104,000 m³ of ramp embankments and 215,000 m² of paved surfaces, to make way for the future development.
In addition to delivering the detailed design, CDM Smith supports the tendering process and provides construction supervision to ensure compliance with quality, schedule and sustainability requirements.
The decommissioning project at Berlin Tegel forms part of one of Europe’s largest urban redevelopment schemes. The transformation of the former airport site is creating space for research, innovative mobility solutions and a future-focused residential district. Through close collaboration with all stakeholders, CDM Smith ensures that sustainability objectives, programme requirements and quality standards are maintained throughout the project.
