Expert Support Throughout Construction

The modernisation of the Rosental Waste Water Treatment Plant is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken by Leipziger Wasserwerke, with CDM Smith playing a central role. Acting as specialist planners, we are responsible for construction-phase groundwater management during HOAI service phase 5 and 6, making a decisive contribution to the safe delivery of the extensive construction works.

Increased Capacity

The expansion of the Rosental waste water treatment plant increases treatment capacity by more than 30 %.

Sustainable Expansion Without Land Take

In future, waste water from over 700,000 people can be treated on the existing site. The expansion is implemented entirely within the existing site – without any additional soil sealing.

Complex Planning for Safe Construction

The expansion of the mechanical and biological treatment processes necessitates extensive ground engineering measures. To ensure that construction can be carried out while the treatment plant remains fully operational, we are planning the entire groundwater control system, including:

  • the design of extraction wells, infiltration systems and pre-treatment facilities,
  • detailed planning of the well’s filters location, depth and structural design,
  • design of the technical equipment and electrical connection capacities,
  • definition of operating modes, including automated operation, and
  • coordination of dewatering targets based on the excavation configuration and the planned shoring system.

This planning approach ensures that the required groundwater drawdown is reliably achieved throughout all construction phases, both with and without infiltration.

Expert support throughout construction

CDM Smith will provide expert consultancy support throughout the construction phase until 2027. During this time:

  • up to 22 extraction wells will be operated,
  • a peak extraction rate of up to 450 m³/h will be achieved, and
  • an additional infiltration rate of up to 120 m³/h will be applied to maintain a stable groundwater regime.
