Investigating PFAS impacts and strengthening groundwater protection programs 

To address emerging contaminants and legacy fuel releases, NAS Pensacola initiated a multi-faceted program focused on PFAS investigation, groundwater compliance monitoring, and pilot treatment of light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) contaminated groundwater. PFAS had been detected in groundwater at several sites, in some cases exceeding EPA Health Advisory Levels (HALs). The PFAS effort centers on pilot-testing the commercially available Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) to optimize PFAS removal. The project also uses high-resolution site characterization tools to locate remaining fuel hot spots, accelerating site closure and reducing long-term risk.

Conducting PFAS treatment testing 

The project team tested three GAC products using PFAS-contaminated groundwater from the site. While short-chain PFAS were removed less effectively than long-chain PFAS, overall removal exceeded previous studies, likely due to the groundwater's low pH.

Performing ground water compliance monitoring 

The team performed groundwater monitoring at NAS Pensacola, Corry Station and Saufley, using UVOST-HP and membrane interface probe technologies to identify contamination sources, and validate monitoring and attenuation trends.

Piloting passive bioventing for LNAPL 

To address LNAPL-contaminated groundwater at the leading edge of the plume and evaluate long-term performance, the team optimized the design and supported implementation of a pilot-scale passive bioventing system.

Develop protective planning materials 

To maintain regulatory compliance and protect human health, the team prepared contaminant trend analyses, health and safety plans, and updated Uniform Federal Policy sampling, analysis and waste management plans. 

PFAS was detected within groundwater at Corry Station, where potable wells supply the entire air station. After treatment with granular activated carbon (GAC), the Cory wells met regulatory standards. Off-base at Saufley Field, though, residential wells exceeding EPA advisory levels prompted bottled water delivery and extension of public water lines. Through coordinated investigation, monitoring and pilot testing, the Navy is advancing plume delineation, modeling and long-term management to protect drinking water resources and support informed land use decisions. The program includes work in restricted and high-security areas, requiring coordination with range commanders, security personnel and federal tenants.
