Leading the first utility geothermal network in the U.S.

As part of its clean energy transition, Eversource sought to reduce its dependence on natural gas for heating and cooling. With CDM Smith’s engineering support, the utility launched the nation’s first geothermal heat pump network, offering a sustainable, replicable model for utilities across the country.

Implementation of a one-pipe ambient loop

A two-mile ambient temperature loop with three borefields now connects 45 buildings, optimizing cost and expandability.

Retrofit for diverse community facilities

The geothermal network links a school, firehouse, low-income and single-family homes through centralized infrastructure.

Engaging stakeholders successfully

CDM Smith aided Eversource’s outreach campaign, securing participation from homeowners and local authorities.

Advancing the clean energy transition

The pilot enables carbon-neutral heating and cooling, reducing long-term energy costs for residents.

Geothermal Unearthed

The Eversource geothermal pilot marks a milestone in sustainable energy innovation, testing a model that could shape the nation’s carbon-neutral future. “Geothermal could be a great part of the global transition to carbon-neutral energy sources, and so we’re eager to test it,” said Nikki Bruno, Eversource’s director of clean technologies. The project will run through two heating and cooling seasons, gathering data to guide future utility-scale geothermal programs.
