Pace Suburban Bus is electrifying its North Division Garage as part of Project Zero, a long-term initiative to transform its bus fleet to zero-emission vehicles by 2040. Our team is transforming the existing garage into a facility designed to support fully electric operations, with a capacity for 60 battery-electric buses. Phase I was completed in late 2025 and marked the opening of Pace’s first electric bus charging depot.

Improvements included the installation of pedestal and overhead pantograph chargers for high-speed charging, supported by high-voltage electrical upgrades and parking lot reconstruction and stormwater management systems.
We worked closely with construction partner F.H. Paschen to plan, design and deliver critical electrification and facility upgrades while the garage remained fully operational.
This joint effort improves transit infrastructure in communities that are historically impacted by industrial pollution, delivering cleaner services, and reduced emissions.
Upgrades to the North Division Garage will improve public transit for residents and essential workers in Waukegan while advancing Pace’s transition to a more sustainable, modern fleet. The project demonstrates Pace’s ability to deliver on critical system investments through a phased, forward-looking approach that balances near-term operational needs with long-term electrification goals. Completion of Phase I represents a significant milestone, establishing the foundation for full facility modernization and expanded electric bus operations. As additional phases move forward, the renovated garage will support reliable, zero-emission service while strengthening transit infrastructure in communities historically impacted by industrial activity and vehicle emissions.
