MoDOT accelerates I-70 expansion with advanced remote sensing and automation

To expand nearly 200 miles of its I-70 corridor, MoDOT needed faster, safer and more accurate ways to complete environmental assessments. Tight timelines, hard-to-reach terrain and complex data needs prompted MoDOT to adopt modern tools that could streamline evaluation and keep project delivery moving.

Deploying remote sensing tools

Sky Wave combined drones, satellites, LiDAR and machine learning to map wetlands, streams and floodplains.

Automating environmental mapping

Advanced automation reduced repeat site visits, lowered costs and helped teams quickly capture high-quality data.

Reaching inaccessible areas safely

Remote sensors allowed MoDOT to evaluate difficult or unsafe terrain, minimizing on-site risks to field crews.

Supporting NEPA decision-making

Digital mapping equipped MoDOT with reliable datasets to meet NEPA goals, advancing the corridor’s design on time.

By using Sky Wave’s integrated sensing and analytics, MoDOT accelerated evaluations, reduced field exposure and improved the precision of environmental data. The streamlined process kept the program aligned with its goal of completing assessments within 1 year while supporting long-term mobility and safety improvements across the corridor.

“From the beginning stages of this project, MoDOT knew they wanted to leverage modern technology to keep the project on track and solve for some of their key challenges,” says project manager Barbara Wells. “By implementing a suite of cutting-edge solutions, we developed a plan that helped them best achieve their goals."
