Turning waste into profit
Excess biogas converted into pipeline-quality fuel now generates new revenue through fuel credits and gas sales.
Des Moines Wastewater Reclamation Authority (WRA) turned surplus biogas into a renewable energy revenue stream with CDM Smith’s help, producing pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG).

As hauled-in waste volumes grew at its wastewater reclamation facility, the WRA began producing more biogas than it could use for heat and power. The WRA saw an opportunity to recover its value by converting surplus biogas into RNG for pipeline injection, turning an operational challenge into an innovative resource recovery solution.
Excess biogas converted into pipeline-quality fuel now generates new revenue through fuel credits and gas sales.
CDM Smith designed a biogas processing system to purify resources while meeting the utility’s strict gas specifications.
Equipment was retrofit within an existing building, upgraded for safety codes and coordinated across disciplines.
Intelligent control systems automatically manage gas quality and flow and optimize methane recovery.
Optimizing co-digestion and biogas recovery at WRA provides long-term economic and environmental gains for the region. The facility now produces enough renewable energy to power more than 5,500 homes, while reducing carbon emissions and supporting local industries. “Not only the CDM Smith team but the entire WRA organization had the vision to start this program over 25 years ago, and they keep the whole operation running day in and day out. It’s awesome to be a part of it,” said Dustin Craig, CDM Smith project manager.
