Making Data Centres Fit for the Future

Data centres form the foundation of digital infrastructure – without them, there would be no cloud services, search engines, streaming platforms or e-commerce. At the same time, they are key drivers of innovations such as artificial intelligence, big data and the Internet of Things. Data-intensive applications in research and industry would not be possible without this infrastructure. In Germany, they play a key role in the digitalisation of small and medium-sized enterprises, industrial automation and digital public administration. Locations such as Frankfurt am Main play a particularly important role due to their high-performance internet hubs, enabling low latency, high performance and secure data processing.

CDM Smith supports projects throughout the project life cycle – from the initial site assessment through to construction supervision. Our expertise is particularly sought after for complex, previously industrial sites, which are often the only available option in attractive locations today. We support our clients in developing such sites, providing environmental and geotechnical services as well as permitting, thereby creating the basis for cost-effective and sustainable implementation. By closely integrating technical, regulatory and environmental aspects, we offer holistic solutions from a single source.

For us, sustainability means taking a holistic view of the site throughout the project life cycle. In addition to industry-specific issues such as energy efficiency, renewable energy and the use of waste heat, our focus is on sustainable site development for our clients. This includes selective demolition, responsible soil management and resource-efficient construction methods. Particularly when dealing with previously used industrial sites, the conscious use of existing materials is crucial. Issues such as urban mining and circular construction are becoming increasingly important and are an integral part of our project work.

Even though we do not directly design or operate the technical infrastructure of data centres, we make an important contribution during the construction process. Through optimised foundation designs, we reduce material usage and CO₂ emissions. We also promote smart soil management, by reusing materials on site wherever possible to minimise transport and resource consumption. Furthermore, we actively engage in industry networks to exchange information on market-relevant developments and proactively support our clients with environmentally sound, efficient approaches.

I’m particularly proud of our progress in the sector since 2017. Through our projects and our involvement in the German Data Centre Association, we’ve successfully established ourselves and built up a strong network. One highlight was organising an industry event where we present our approaches to sustainable site development – a strong example of how we contribute to innovation and sustainability in the industry.
