Raising the floodwalls along Pittsburgh’s Parkway Central

A sunken section of I-376 (colloquially known as the “bathtub”) has long been vulnerable to flooding from the adjacent Monongahela River. PennDOT is advancing a modern flood protection solution that raises the floodwall, enhances pumping capacity, and incorporates new warning systems to keep this critical artery open and safe.

A trusted partnership for transformational results

PennDOT used CDM Smith’s firsthand knowledge of the interstate and preexisting infrastructure to build a path forward.

Upgraded pumps and warning systems

New low-maintenance pumps and early warning systems will speed up storm response and cut costs of frequent flood cleanups.

Mitigating construction impacts

Prefabricated elements limit congestion and right-of-way impacts, ensuring less disruption for the 70,000 daily vehicles.

Balancing safety and community needs

By reducing costly cleanups and long closures, PennDOT is ensuring safer and more reliable travel throughout Pittsburgh.

These efforts mark a pivotal step in retiring the “bathtub” nickname and reinforcing one of Pittsburgh’s most vital transportation corridors. With resilient floodwalls, faster response capabilities, and community-minded construction, PennDOT and CDM Smith are ensuring Parkway Central remains safe, connected, and prepared for future challenges.
