A forward-thinking path to energy security

While solar is one of the cleanest energy sources on the planet, system optimization is key to its success. The Connecticut National Guard partnered with CDM Smith to enhance efficiency at its Norwich facility, conducting an assessment, preliminary design and cost analyses, paving the way for future renewable upgrades.

Facility evaluation and solar study

A preliminary assessment of the armory, storage shed, and auxiliary roofs analyzed existing conditions and future upgrades.

Full-scale lifecycle analysis

Teams developed cost models that account for capital and operational expenses over a 20–25-year lifespan.

Energy production and payback modeling

Desktop simulations estimated solar outputs and calculated payback periods for the proposed options.

A deeply committed project team

Construction teams will work hand-in-hand with design engineers, field staff and city leaders to meet project goals.

The project will strengthen the Norwich facility’s long-term energy security. Building on the Norwich work, the Connecticut National Guard has also requested solar evaluations for 16 additional buildings at Camp Nett in Niantic, further advancing its commitment to sustainable, resilient operations.
