Water Resource Infrastructure and Resiliency

Applying architectural design to transform a public playground

Millennium Park, once the Gardner Street Landfill, is now a leading multi-use recreation destination in Boston. The project included capping the landfill and transforming the site into a vibrant open space with synthetic and natural turf fields, courts, a playground, walking paths, gathering areas and supporting infrastructure. In 2022, CDM Smith completed a comprehensive redesign of the centrally located playground, with scenic views of surrounding wetlands, forested areas and the Boston skyline.

Inclusive design features

A central multi-level “treehouse” structure provides accessible play across vertical elements, including ADA-compliant wheelchair access to an elevated viewing deck.

Grounded in nature

Inspired by a Charles River habitat, our team incorporated natural materials to strengthen the connection to nature, while preserving existing mature trees to provide an immediate sense of permanence.

Ecological landscape restoration

Surrounding the playground, restored slopes planted with native meadow species create a natural buffer that reduces wind exposure while attracting pollinators and diverse wildlife.

Partnering to expand public spaces

Our team developed a thematic design in response to direction from the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.

Millennium Park now includes six miles of accessible pedestrian paths, athletic fields, canoe launches, picnic areas and a fully updated universal playground inclusive to all users. The connected path links to a broader trail system and the Charles River, creating an escape from Boston’s busy urban environment.
