South Carolina rebuilds its busiest interchange to improve safety and mobility

Once nicknamed “Malfunction Junction,” the convergence of I-20, I-26, and I-126 has long challenged commuters and freight alike. Through Carolina Crossroads—the largest transportation program in state history—SCDOT delivers upgraded infrastructure that saves time, improves safety and supports the state’s growing economy.

Reduced traffic congestion and travel time

Travelers are expected to save up to 112 hours annually in travel time, making for smoother and more consistent mobility.

Enhanced safety for all drivers

Reconfigured interchanges eliminate weaving conflicts, lower crash risks, and improve emergency access.

Upgraded bridges, lanes, and interchanges

Modernized interchanges, additional lanes and new bridges prepare SCDOT’s transportation network for future mobility needs.

Regional development and economic vitality

Carolina Crossroads aligns infrastructure expansion with regional growth, accessibility and economic progress.

CDM Smith is also supporting public outreach and deploying custom statistical analysis tools. The team further manages environmental compliance, coordinates right-of-way and traffic and operates an AASHTO-accredited testing lab.
