WePass: Facilitating Fish Migration and Conservation at the Iron Gates

The Danube is a biodiversity hotspot in Europe. We appreciate the paramount importance of the region’s broader interlinked environmental well-being. We see the survival of native Danube River fish species such as sturgeon, shad, barbel, nase, and others as both indicator of the region’s environmental health and as symbol of the Danube region’s common identity.

What is WePass?

WePass is an initiative aiming to facilitate fish migration in the Danube River Basin. A team of multi-disciplinary experts from the ICPDR, CDM SMITH, DDNI, IMSI, JCWI, NINA  and OAK  is focussing on the restoration of common and endangered fish species migration routes in the Danube River, its tributaries, and specifically at the Iron Gate Dams.

This project has received funding from the European Union.

Working in Stages

The first project stage "WePass” (11/2018 - 11/2021) constituted the preparatory works for a feasibility study of fish migration solutions for the Iron Gate Dams – the second project stage entitled “WePass2”. The WePass2 website contains an overview of the activities that commenced in 04/2022 and include extensive fish movement monitoring and the preliminary design of fishways at the Iron Gate Dams.
