Rebuilding critical infrastructure to strengthen Nepal’s government and community resilience

After Nepal’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015, CDM Smith was engaged to help rebuild. We supported the government to plan and manage the reconstruction of schools, health facilities, and other essential infrastructure. The team worked closely with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Nepal’s national ministries to design and reconstruct services under the Nepal National Reconstruction Program (NCRP), including facility assessment, investigations, and seismically resilient designs to ensure the sustainability and long-term safety.

18 critical facilities under construction

Rebuilding vital schools and health centers to serve communities affected by the earthquake.

10,000 workers trained on health and safety

Empowering local construction teams with H&S training skills and awareness.

122,000 members impacted

Supporting 122,000 students and related health service seekers from reconstruction facilities.

2020 Industry Leader Award

Recognized as one of the only 36 teams globally by the National Safety Council within the 2020 Industry Leader Award.

In addition to engineering support, our team focused on establishing a resilient environment in Nepal through training on quality control and assurance and health & safety (H&S). Considering the rugged and remote terrain, we developed a journey management protocol to ensure safe site access under hazardous conditions, which has strengthened local team capacity and embedded long-term safety practices.
