Setting new standards in grid stability and sustainability

CDM Smith is building the world’s largest grid battery storage system in Kupferzell, Germany. With 250 MW per hour output and spanning 34,000 m², the facility will cut transmission costs, optimize power line use, and stabilize the grid within milliseconds. Involved since planning, CDM Smith provides execution and construction services, supported by a 3D BIM model. Trial operation took place in 2025, reinforcing Germany’s leadership in sustainable power and resilient grid systems.

Delivering largest grid battery capacity

250 MW per hour output sets a global benchmark in storage, ensuring resilience and efficiency for Germany’s transmission grid.

Applying advanced BIM modeling

Digital 3D models enhance planning, execution, and refinement, ensuring accuracy and efficiency throughout the construction process.

Meeting construction milestones

An early construction start got groundworks and general site development moving quickly, moving the project toward trial operation.

Contributing to energy transition

The project strengthens Germany’s sustainability goals, reducing reliance on traditional systems and supporting renewable integration.

The Kupferzell Grid Booster demonstrates CDM Smith’s role in advancing Germany’s national energy transition. “We are very proud to be able to make such a significant contribution,” said Lukas Wallrabe, deputy head of business development in Germany. In 2023, the project received the prestigious ICPMA Sustainability Award, recognizing excellence and innovation in project management.  Together with Fluence Energy, the project team is setting new standards for grid stability, efficiency, and resilience, ensuring longterm benefits for Germany’s power system and its communities.
