Achieving the gold standard for environmental, social and governance ideals

The steel industry has not historically been known for its environmentally conscious outlook, but Big River Steel sought to change that perception and affirm its commitment to sustainability by seeking ResponsibleSteel™ site verification. To do so, Big River Steel teamed up with CDM Smith to address the rigorous requirements.

Aligning with ResponsibleSteel™ standards

Elements included decarbonization, noise reduction, water and air stewardship, biodiversity, labor rights and public engagement.

A deep bench of technical expertise

The project involved 20 CDM Smith experts across 10 technical disciplines, led by leading sustainability practitioners.

Expediated project delivery

While the process was expected to take 18 months, site certification was achieved in 8 months thanks to an array of in-house expertise.

A landmark achievement

Certification marks a milestone on the journey to build a more sustainable future for customers, communities and the planet.

This certification provides clear evidence of Big River Steel’s commitment to sustainable, responsible manufacturing with stakeholders’ interests front and center. The company will uphold the certification through annual surveillance audits and full recertification every three years.
