Delivering smarter, more accessible transit solutions for Bay Area communities

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has been a pillar of the Bay Area’s evolution, uniting communities and powering economic growth. As a trusted partner, CDM Smith has played a key role in shaping this legacy, helping BART expand its reach, modernize its infrastructure and advance equitable, resilient transit solutions that move the region forward.

Delivering service to underserved communities

A 10-mile rail extension that seamlessly, and cost-effectively delivers long-promised transit access for minority and low-income populations.

Designing safer station access

Pedestrian/bicycle circulation plans and bridges now deliver safe and efficient passenger movement to any from station stops.

Building consensus among community members

Public engagement workshops, pop-ups and committee meetings ensured residents and riders were well informed of project progress.

A diverse, effective partnership since 1968

CDM Smith and BART have partnered on everything from system expansions to the development of green vehicle maintenance practices.

From early planning to major expansions, the partnership has been defined by collaboration, innovation and a shared purpose. Reflecting on this legacy, multimodal transportation expert Bill Hurrell says, “A very rewarding part of my career has been working with BART, seeing things progress from planning to implementation to success.” This enduring relationship continues to advance safe, equitable and sustainable mobility for generations to come.
