A 30-year roadmap to improve supply reliability, water affordability, and economic vitality

San Jose Water (SJW) has developed a Strategic Water Resources Plan to increase the resiliency of its water supplies. Partnering with the One Water experts at CDM Smith, SJW quantified water supply risks, simulated future water demands, and tested the impacts of planning scenarios to future-proof its supply.

Technical forecasting innovations

Econometric water demand forecasting was used to account for major factors influencing water use.

CDM Smith’s Water Integration Tool

Supply simulations predicted estimates of water shortages through historical and hydrological conditions.

Scenario planning & adaptive management

Teams defined future water supply investments, ranked alternatives, and developed a strategy to adapt to changed conditions.

Stakeholder support and communication

Collaboration with the board of directors, technical staff, and stakeholders helped solicit input and build consensus.

“The Board is very impressed by the roadmap and strategy developed by CDM Smith,” said Eric Thornburg, the CEO of SJW Group. “I gained insights that were not apparent from either our own previous planning reports or those of our imported water provider,” said SJW project manager Bill Tuttle. “The plan is truly a testament to the CDM Smith team’s engineering prowess.” ”
