USAID restores earthquake-damaged facilities to rebuild resilient communities in Pakistan

After an earthquake destroyed thousands of buildings and limited access to education and healthcare in northwest Pakistan, USAID launched the Pakistan Reconstruction Program and partnered with CDM Smith to rebuild safe, modern, and seismically sound facilities.

Delivering resilient public facilities

A design-build approach helped deliver schools and hospitals that restored learning environments and reliable healthcare.

Strengthening seismic safety standards

Advanced structural systems, improved materials, and standardized modular designs elevated seismic performance.

Improving community access to services

Site relocation, safer grading, and upgraded infrastructure reconnected communities to water supply and other services.

Building local capacity and oversight

By working with contractors and local authorities, the team improved construction practices and sustainable operations.

Across the program, CDM Smith delivered nearly 150 modern, durable facilities and improved water, sanitation, and utility systems that strengthened everyday life for thousands of families. Close coordination with communities and government agencies ensured culturally appropriate designs and long-term sustainability. These efforts helped restore confidence, support recovery, and build a stronger, safer foundation for Pakistan’s future.
