Navigating the first step: why mentorship matters for new professionals

No matter how prepared you feel, stepping into your first professional role can be daunting. Reflecting on my own initial years at CDM Smith, I realized that having a mentor is not just a perk, but a critical catalyst for success.

My own journey began when I saw someone being recognized in our company as a rising star with a promising future in her field. I admired how she built her career, and I wanted to connect with her to learn how I could do that for my career. What was born from my reaching out was a fantastic mentor relationship with Ji Im, a seasoned professional with a wealth of experience and a genuine desire to guide me. Despite being across the country from each other and only being able to communicate via Teams, Ji and I formed a truly special relationship. She became my go-to source for everything from deciphering technical jargon to understanding our firm’s extensive list of employee benefits. Knowing I had someone readily available to answer my questions, big or small, instilled a sense of confidence that was invaluable during those early days.

The value of mentorship extended far beyond simply answering questions. It opened doors to new oppor­tu­ni­ties and connections.

As an envi­ron­men­tal engineer, I had prior involvement with the American Water Works Association (AWWA). Imagine my surprise when I learned my mentor was actually the chair of its Young Profes­sion­als Committee! This not only confirmed her expertise but also presented exciting new pathways in my career. Through these connections, I expanded my network, collab­o­rated with talented individuals and discovered avenues for growth I wouldn't have found on my own.

Looking back, the ripple effect of mentorship is clear. What began as guidance from my mentor has transformed into a fulfilling cycle where I now mentor Natalie Gayoso and Jasmine Quiambao. It's an honor to pay forward the lessons I received and witness their own journeys unfold. This transition from mentee to mentor embodies the continuous loop of mentorship, where knowledge and wisdom flow from one generation to the next, empowering each other to reach their full potential.

This role comes with immense gratitude. I recognize the significant impact mentorship has had on my own path and the privilege it is to guide and empower the next generation of profes­sion­als as they embark on their own journeys of discovery.
