Mary Looney, PhD
Environmental Scientist & Risk Assessor
Dr. Mary Looney is an experienced toxicologist passionate about human health and environmental risk assessments. Her breadth of knowledge spans from chemical exposure and fate to subsequent environmental impacts and human health effects.
“I genuinely enjoy the work that I get to do, but every job has its tough days. My inspiration on these days is that the work I perform manifests into tangible positive outcomes for the communities, environments, and ecosystems surrounding the projects I contribute to,” says Mary. “I also work with several incredible minds in the field, and I am inspired by them to develop my skills and hone my risk assessment expertise.”
She has worked extensively with common marine contaminates, including PCBs, PAHs, and crude oil, and understanding their impacts on marine fauna through the development of molecular laboratory techniques to perform toxicity testing.
Mary is especially proud of her human health assessment work on the Central City, Clear Creek Superfund site in Colorado, a location impacted by historic mining activities. “Throughout this project, we (CDM Smith) have accomplished an extensive remedial investigation and human health risk assessment for CDPHE while navigating nuanced yet significant challenges in data interpretation and remedial strategies. In this endeavor, we have built a strong working relationship with CDPHE and Region 8 of the EPA and are looking forward to the next phases of this project.”

I work with several incredible minds in the field, and I am inspired by them to develop my skills and hone my risk assessment expertise.
