Expanding Regional Connectivity
The 73-kilometer corridor strengthens connections between Dubai and neighboring cities, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, while improving mobility across key development areas in Dubai and transportation corridors.
CDM Smith provided study, design, tender support and construction supervision services for the Emirates Road (E611) formerly named Dubai Outer Bypass. Delivered in three phases, the project included the expansion of the 23km existing roadway, development of the 50km new highway section, design of major grade-separated interchanges, and integration of critical infrastructure systems. Through rigorous planning, stakeholder coordination, and quality-focused design optimization, CDM Smith helped create a high-capacity regional corridor supporting Dubai’s long-term growth.
The 73-kilometer corridor strengthens connections between Dubai and neighboring cities, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, while improving mobility across key development areas in Dubai and transportation corridors.
The project included six-lane carriageway in each direction; multiple grade-separated interchanges, underpasses and strategic roadway upgrades designed for a speed of 140 kilometers per hour.
CDM Smith coordinated roadway, drainage, utility protection, street lighting and traffic safety systems to support efficient project implementation and long-term operations.
The bypass corridor was designed to accommodate future traffic demands while providing improved accessibility, safety, and operational performance across the network.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) appointed CDM Smith, in association with Al Turath Engineering Consultants, to provide preliminary studies, detailed designs, tendering and construction supervision services for the Emirates Road (E611), formerly known as Dubai Outer Bypass. Valued at approximately AED 1.4 billion, the project comprised of a 73-kilometer highway corridor designed for operating speeds of 140 kilometers per hour, making it one of Dubai’s most significant transportation infrastructure investments.
The project was delivered across three phases and included both the widening of existing roadway and construction of new highway sections. Phases I and II expanded approximately 23 kilometers of roadway from the Sharjah border to the Dubai–Al Ain Road, increasing capacity to six lanes in each direction and introducing a full cloverleaf interchange at Al Awir Road. Phases III and IV extended the corridor between Dubai–Al Ain Road, Al Qudra Road till Dubai - Abu Dhabi border, incorporating multiple grade-separated interchanges, underpasses and strategic connections to major intersecting corridors. The scope also included utility relocations and protection works, stormwater drainage systems, street lighting, U-turn facility through underpasses, safety barriers and roadway infrastructure. Through robust project management and close coordination with stakeholders and utility authorities, CDM Smith helped deliver a critical transportation corridor that supports regional mobility, economic development and future growth across the Emirate of Dubai.
