Designing and supervising a major 23-km road upgrade to improve mobility and safety

CDM Smith served as lead design consultant, delivering full design, utility coordination, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) integration and construction supervision for dualization of Al Daoon Road. We widened the corridor to four lanes each way, converted eight roundabouts to signalized intersections, upgraded interchanges, and introduced pedestrian, cycling, landscaping and stormwater improvements while managing utilities and maintaining live traffic.

Comprehensive multimodal road upgrade

The project expands Al Daoon Road from 3×3 to 4×4 lanes across 23 km, replaces eight roundabouts with signalized intersections, and upgrades five key interchanges. We designed new pavements, footpaths, cycling routes, public realm features and integrated sustainable transport elements.

Advanced traffic and ITS integration

State-of-the-art ITS were designed to improve junction performance and network efficiency. Smart controllers, adaptive signal strategies and monitoring systems enhance traffic flow and safety across rapidly growing communities.

Utility diversion and corridor coordination

The design included full potable water, irrigation, stormwater, telecom and power coordination, with all NOCs secured by authorities. We resolved complex utility conflicts in constrained corridors through precise planning and stakeholder collaboration.

Safe and staged construction under live traffic

A robust temporary traffic management plan minimized disruption during construction. Staged execution allowed uninterrupted mobility while coordinating with ongoing ADMCC Falcon Eye systems, ITC upgrades and adjacent development projects.

Al Daoon Road is a major corridor linking Shamka, Madinat Al Riyadh and Baniyas. The project aims to relieve heavy congestion on E20, E22 and E30 by widening the existing three-lane roadway to four lanes in each direction over 23 km, converting eight roundabouts into signalized intersections, and upgrading interchanges IC2, IC3, IC4 and IC5. We delivered full roadway, ITS, stormwater, irrigation, street lighting and utility designs, along with pedestrian and cycling facilities and enhanced public realm features. A comprehensive TTM strategy supports safe construction under live traffic and adjacent development works. Sustainability measures included LED lighting, recycled water use and Geocell stormwater systems. The project strengthens connectivity, improves safety and supports Abu Dhabi’s 2040 urban vision.
