Road, drainage and mobility improvements for the E45 corridor in Al Dhafra

CDM Smith is rehabilitating and upgrading the E45 corridor through comprehensive traffic analysis, road design, stormwater improvements and safety enhancements. The project includes corridor widening, junction reconfiguration, smart signals, landscaping and integration with cycle tracks. Full design stages and tender documentation support DMT’s long-term mobility goals.

Enhanced corridor safety and traffic efficiency

The project introduces widened sections, redesigned junctions and smart signal systems to improve safety and reduce delays. Eliminating underutilized intersections and adding acceleration and deceleration lanes support smoother, safer traffic operations across the 10-km corridor.

Robust stormwater and drainage resilience

We deployed advanced hydraulic modelling, CCTV surveys and crawler inspections to assess vulnerabilities and design a full stormwater network. These solutions address flooding risks, improve system reliability, and support long-term resilience for the region.

Improved connectivity and sustainable mobility

The project enhances community access by integrating the upgraded corridor with adjacent cycle tracks, commercial zones and residential areas. Median beautification and landscape features further improve user experience and support sustainable urban development.

End-to-end design, studies and tender support

The scope spans data collection, concept, preliminary and detailed design, safety audits, traffic studies, utility coordination, and tender document preparation. Drone footage and visual materials were produced to support stakeholder communication and project positioning.

The Department of Municipalities and Transport–Al Dhafra Region appointed CDM Smith to deliver the rehabilitation and upgrade of the E45 corridor, the primary spine serving Madinat Zayed and surrounding communities. The project addresses rising traffic demands driven by urban expansion and major events such as the Liwa Festival. We are widening a 10-km stretch of E45, removing two underutilized junctions and creating a new junction in front of Al Dhafra Municipality to better serve industrial areas. We designed smart signal systems, a complete stormwater network and landscaped medians featuring hardscape and softscape treatments. Extensive field surveys, CCTV inspections, hydraulic modelling and traffic studies informed targeted improvements. The project includes road safety audits, lighting design, utility diversions and preparation of full tender documents. These enhancements improve mobility, safety and resilience, supporting long-term regional development across Al Dhafra.
