Comprehensive study, design and supervision for major expressway and interchange upgrades

CDM Smith delivered full design and supervision services to upgrade critical sections of the Dubai–Al Ain Road, widening the corridor, replacing bridges, introducing advanced free-flow interchanges, and resolving tight geometric, utilities and staging constraints. We applied 3D modelling, value engineering, and fast-track stakeholders' coordination to optimize safety, capacity, constructability, and cost.

Innovative interchange and corridor solutions

We introduced directional, free-flow and braided interchange forms, including the “butterfly” concept, to eliminate weaving, improve safety and maximize capacity. Structural replacements, bridge widening, and optimized ramp geometry ensured robust and seamless connectivity across several major highway corridors.

Cost-effective design through value engineering

Extensive iterations of concept alternatives, assessments and 3D visualization, and informed client decisions. Value engineering across both contracts delivered substantial savings, including approximately US$ 8M on Contract 1A and US$ 0.5M on Contract 1B while meeting performance and schedule objectives.

Efficient coordination for major urban constraints

The project required complex staging and utilities’ protection within dense urban zones. Our multidisciplinary planning minimized impacts on live traffic, safeguarded existing assets, and preserved development corridors, all while maintaining momentum on parallel construction activities.

Advanced digital delivery for complex geometry

3D Highway modelling allowed teams to visualize constraints, refine alignments and rapidly coordinate discipline interfaces. Digital workflows minimized design rework, enhanced accuracy, and supported clear communication with decision makers and stakeholders throughout design and supervision.

The Dubai–Al Ain Road (E66) is one of UAE’s most strategic corridors, linking Dubai with Al Ain and serving rapidly growing residential and commercial districts. We supported the Roads & Transport Authority through two major contracts—R1020-1A and R1020-1B—covering nearly 16 km of widening, interchange upgrades and new connections. Work included converting the existing 3x3 dual carriageway into a 6x6 expressway with collector-distribution roads, constructing new free-flow interchanges at SMBZ, SZBH and Meydan-Manamah, upgrading Bu Kidra Interchange, and improving local access through Nad Al Shiba. Significant structural works included new bridges, replacement of existing crossings and complex utilities’ diversions. Advanced 3D modelling, tight stakeholder coordination and rigorous value engineering led to superior traffic performance, enhanced safety and over US$ 8.5M in combined project savings. We integrated design and supervision services ensured efficient delivery, minimized disruptions, and met the client objectives of sustainable and long-term mobility.
