Integrated Assessment and Remediation of Complex Contamination

CDM Smith delivered a comprehensive assessment and remediation program for a manufacturing site impacted by chlorinated hydrocarbons. Our team developed and refined the site conceptual model through detailed investigation and risk assessment to inform remedial decision-making. Remediation included targeted soil excavation with offsite disposal, enhanced in situ bioremediation to address multiple groundwater source areas, and multiphase vacuum extraction near occupied buildings. We supported the client through auditor and regulator engagement to ensure compliant, practical outcomes.

Conceptual Site Model

Through performance of site investigation and risk assessment works, a detailed understanding of the conceptual site model was developed, which informed the remedial options assessment.

Remedial Options Assessment and Design

A remedial options assessment process was utilised to identify the preferred remedial approach, with consideration of technical, logistical and financial elements. The process was able to clearly identify the preferred approach for remediation for each of the source areas

Site implementation

As Principal Contractor, we delivered the installation and commissioning of multiple remedial solutions. We provided ongoing operation and maintenance of the remediation approaches, focusing on achieving the remedial end points in a timely and efficient manner.

Auditor and Regulator Engagement

CDM Smith supported the client through ongoing engagement with environmental auditors and regulators, providing clear technical justification for remedial decisions, supporting approvals, and ensuring works were implemented in accordance with regulatory requirements and agreed site objectives.

This project demonstrates CDM Smith’s ability to integrate detailed site assessment, risk evaluation, and remediation delivery on complex contaminated land sites within active urban environments. By combining strong technical understanding with practical construction and operational experience, our team delivered tailored remediation solutions that addressed site-specific risks while minimising disruption to ongoing site use. CDM Smith’s involvement from investigation through implementation allowed continuity in decision-making and efficient progression from assessment to remediation. Our proactive engagement with environmental auditors and regulators ensured transparency, supported timely approvals, and provided confidence that remedial works met regulatory and audit requirements. This integrated, end-to-end approach enabled effective risk reduction and supported the client’s long-term site management objectives.
