A regulator-ready Mine Closure Plan aligned with WA guidelines

CDM Smith worked closely with Agnew Gold Mining Company to deliver a fully updated Mine Closure Plan in compliance with the 2020 Western Australian guidelines. Our team facilitated closure risk assessment workshops, integrated stakeholder engagement, and refined closure strategies to enhance sustainability and cost efficiency. By aligning internal and external expectations early, we enabled a proactive, transparent, and regulator-ready submission.

Guideline-aligned closure planning

Updated the Mine Closure Plan to meet 2020 WA guidelines, ensuring compliance with Department of Energy, Mining, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) expectations. The plan reflected best practice in risk management, progressive rehabilitation, and long-term site transition.

Collaborative risk assessment

Facilitated multi-stakeholder workshops to evaluate closure risks, including those affecting future land users and surrounding communities. The process built shared understanding of closure pathways, strengthened regulatory confidence, and encouraged early integration of closure design.

Stakeholder education and alignment

Led structured engagement and training sessions for internal and external stakeholders to improve understanding of closure requirements, benefits of early planning, and opportunities for cost reduction. Enhanced internal capacity to manage closure implementation.

Sustainable and community-focused outcomes

Highlighted potential social and environmental benefits of early closure planning, including reduced residual liabilities and improved land-use outcomes for local communities. Reinforced CDM Smith’s commitment to responsible mining and long-term value creation.

Agnew Gold Mining Company Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Australia Pty Ltd, engaged CDM Smith to update its Mine Closure Plan in line with the 2020 Western Australian guidelines and triennial review requirements. The plan update involved detailed closure risk assessment workshops focused on identifying risks to future land users and integrating community engagement into closure decision-making. CDM Smith led internal and external stakeholder education sessions to strengthen understanding of closure processes and highlight the cost savings and community benefits that early closure planning can deliver. The 2024 Mine Closure Plan prepared by CDM Smith was structured to meet Department of Energy, Mining, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) requirements, ensuring alignment with regulatory expectations and demonstrating the client’s proactive approach to sustainable mine lifecycle management.
