Planning and design support to enhance Dubai’s citywide cycling network

CDM Smith delivered planning, design and mobility studies to upgrade cycling and jogging corridors across Dubai. We assessed accessibility, user movement, safety and connectivity requirements while designing road and intersection improvements. The scope included preliminary study, detailed design and tender documentation, supporting RTA’s long-term active mobility vision.

Enhanced active mobility and user experience

The project elevates the usability and attractiveness of Dubai’s cycling and jogging routes by redesigning open spaces, improving continuity and integrating features that support comfort and safety. This enhances the experience for cyclists, joggers and pedestrians across diverse urban settings.

Comprehensive accessibility and movement analysis

CDM Smith evaluated pedestrian, cyclist, bus and vehicular circulation patterns to improve access for all users, including people of determination. The project outcome supports upgrades on major corridors, community routes and connections to public facilities.

Road and intersection integration design

We analyzed and designed improvements at intersections and conflict points where new alignments meet existing infrastructure. This ensured safe transitions, continuous mobility and smooth integration into Dubai’s broader transportation network.

End-to-end planning and design delivery

The assignment spans concept studies, preliminary and final design and preparation of tender and contract documentation. We also provided construction supervision support, ensuring quality and consistency from planning through delivery.

Dubai Roads & Transport Authority appointed CDM Smith to expand and enhance Dubai’s cycle and jogging track network across several strategic locations, including Al Warqa to Seih Al Salam, International City, Al Nahda–Tunis Road, Hor Al Anz, Jumeirah Al Khail Road, Jumeirah Satwa–Al Quoz and multiple community internal corridors. The goal is to elevate active mobility by improving accessibility, user safety and overall experience through enhanced open space design and movement planning. We studied cyclist and pedestrian flows, accessibility requirements for people of determination, parking requirements, bus circulation and connections to adjacent land uses. The project also included roads and intersection improvements to ensure seamless integration of new cycle track alignments. We were responsible for delivering preliminary studies, detailed design, tender documents and construction supervision services, supporting Dubai’s commitment to a walkable, bicycle-friendly city.
