‘Because we did it, rather than just talking about it’
How Circular Construction Is Already Working Today
Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder's visit to the Circle in Offenbach showed how the circular economy can already work in infrastructure construction today. Representatives from politics, the construction industry and infrastructure management discussed concrete solutions, pilot projects and prospects for a circular infrastructure. CDM Smith was also represented by Andreas Roth, member of the Executive Board, and Hartmut Schmid, Head of Sustainability.
The focus was on how large infrastructure projects can be implemented more quickly, economically and sustainably, and what role digitalisation and the circular economy play in this. During the Experience Walk, guests gained insights into ongoing projects, innovations and a presentation of recycled materials.
Innovations Driving the Shift to Circular InfrastructurE
Daniel Imhäuser, initiator of the Circle, and Björn Simon, Member of the German Parliament and transport policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, emphasised the importance of cooperation along the entire value chain at the start of the event. In his keynote speech, Federal Transport Minister Schnieder highlighted that Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a key tool for the transformation of infrastructure construction. Digital models enable holistic planning and facilitate the reuse of materials. At the same time, he called for a consistent reduction in bureaucracy and modern planning laws to enable innovations to be implemented more quickly.
Dr Michael Güntner, CEO of Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, presented new approaches to federal highway construction, such as the processing and separation of materials directly on site. He also emphasised the importance of BIM as a digital model for planning, construction and recycling.

From Vision to Reality: Circular Infrastructure in Practice
The innovation panel made it clear that the transition to a circular infrastructure can only succeed if we work together. Schnieder called for solutions to be implemented consistently. Güntner pointed to the high need for renovation, especially of bridges, and the necessity of breaking new ground. Other voices advocated making positive examples visible, using real-world laboratories and giving planners more freedom in the use of materials.
In conclusion, Daniel Imhäuser emphasised that the Circle itself is seen as a real-world laboratory in which the circular economy is being put into practice.
In five years' time, we will say: because we simply did it and didn't just talk about it.
