The introduction of a modern waste management system is one of the priority objectives of the government in Georgia. In recent years, the South Caucasian country has already taken the first important steps – a number of projects have been initiated and implemented. Further measures are now planned in two Georgian regions, which CDM Smith is supporting with professional consulting and planning services.

In 2016, Georgia adopted a strategy and action plan for national waste management. The aim is to implement integrated solid waste management systems in accordance with EU standards. In the regions of Mingrelia, Upper Swanetia and Kakhetia, various measures are also to be taken to achieve this goal in the long term. These are financed by the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) with a sum of 30 million euros.

The construction of two municipal waste landfills, the environmentally friendly closure of old landfills and the construction of several transfer stations are planned. Furthermore, a pilot composting plant as well as the tenders for vehicles for waste collection and street cleaning are planned.

CDM Smith has been awarded to support the implementation of the projects through to completion. We initially carry out extensive environmental studies and site analyses, involve the public in site selection, plan and tender the necessary construction work and take over local construction supervision and documentation.

The work in Mingrelia and Upper Swanetia as well as Kaketi should be completed in five years. Both regions will thus benefit from sustainable waste management.

While CDM Smith has implemented similar KfW funded projects in the past it is an important milestone for us to commence operations in a new country and help improve the quality of life for the people in Georgia.
