Implementation of Solid Waste Management in Jordan

Amman Jordan
Jordan's waste management system is currently facing challenges greater than ever before. Due to the Syrian refugee crisis, Jordan's population has grown significantly over the last few years, while living conditions in the country have also improved. As a result, the amount of waste has risen significantly in recent years, beyond exceeding the limited resources of the SWM systems, particularly in the capital Amman. As a result of this increased waste generation, the volume of landfill waste is expected to double over the next 15 years . This particularly has negative effects on the environment , because most of the collected waste has so far been landfilled without treatment, and only a small percentage of recyclable items are returned to the cycle

In recent years, however, waste management has become an increasing priority in politics - sustainable solutions are being sought. The Jordanian government adopted a national strategy for Jordanian waste management in 2015. The strategy is part of the vision 2025, which includes improving infrastructure as well as education and health.

To support the goals of the national management strategy, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has launched a project on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to introduce a waste management system in Jordan. The aim of the project is to improve, further develop and implement the institutional and technical conditions already in place for the development of a sustainable circular economy in Jordan. The project follows a multi-level approach.

GIZ commissioned CDM Smith to provide consultancy services. Among other things, the project aims to

  • Enhance capacities of public and private sector stakeholders with regards to cooperation in the circular economy;
  • Improve technical and institutional capacities of municipal authorities to establish a sustainable circular economy and successful implementation of demonstration projects for circular economy;
  • Integration of separate collection of recyclables into the waste management plan for Amman
  • Provide technical advice and assistance with the consultation processes for revision of the National Solid Waste Management Strategy
