CDM Smith participates in the expansion of the power supply system in Northern Germany

Lower Saxony Germany
Germany has set the goal of generating 80 % of its power through renewable energy by 2050. Power generation from wind turbines in Northern Germany is a critical part of reaching this target. In order to secure the required capacities for power transmission, the transmission providers TenneT and Amprion are expanding the grid between Conneforde and the Merzen area in Lower Saxony. The planned 380 kV power line will stretch for approximately 125 kilometres.

For the roughly 100 km long northern part of the project in TenneT‘s transmission area, the transmission provider commissioned a joint venture to coordinate and manage the various aspects such as planning, approval, obtaining easements and construction. CDM Smith and Uniper Technologies (Gelsenkirchen) are jointly taking over the overall project management for all services in the areas of planning, assistance in the awarding of construction contracts and construction supervision, in technical terms, also known as EPCM (Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management).

Uniper leads the joint venture and manages the overall project during the planning and construction phase. CDM Smith is responsible for planning and construction supervision of two transformer stations and a cable junction system. Further services being carried out by CDM Smith include environmental planning, pedological and ecological construction supervision. The project started for the team in March 2020, and the new line is scheduled to go into operation in 2026.
Planning, awarding of contracts and construction supervision from one single source save costs and time in this important infrastructure project.
