CDM Smith wins Award for “Best Use of Geotechnical Data on an International Project”
9 November 2018
Oxford, UK
CDM Smith was awarded the Geotechnical Data Management Award 2018 on 16 October 2018 in Oxford, UK. The award was presented to the (international?) company that has made the best contribution to the development or deployment of new and innovative technologies for site exploration. The British company Keynetix Ltd., which specialises in software development with a focus on geotechnical data management and BIM (Building Information Modelling), recognised CDM Smith’s advanced expertise in breakthrough technologies and strengthened our position as a market leader in this field.

In order to implement the current project, CDM Smith piloted their approach by developing a 3D BIM ground model of the Oberhausen-Emmerich railway extension line (length over 70 km). This was generated using several hundred boreholes and geotechnical reports as well as further external data. The model, which visually and data-technically summarises all relevant subsoil information, makes it possible to work together with all other disciplines in a more time- and cost-efficient manner. In addition to data acquisition, the model was also used to clearly demonstrate the great potential of 3D ground modelling using BIM for increasing efficiency in geotechnical planning.
