World Largest Storage-as-Transmission project

Kupferzell Germany
CDM Smith signed a contract with Fluence for the design and build of a 250 MW battery-based energy storage system in Kupferzell (Germany). The project, known as “Netzbooster,” will reduce operating costs of Germany’s transmission system, allow the grid operator to increase the utilization of its existing and new power lines, and respond within milliseconds to keep the power system stable should a transmission line failure occur.

CDM Smith will provide civil engineering and civil works, including permitting according to the “Planfeststellungsverfahren” (plan approval procedure), execution planning, and the building and supervision of all civil structures on the site.

The permitting phase began in October 2022. After the execution planning and securing building permits, CDM Smith will start with the mobilization of the site, preparatory groundworks and site development. Civil work for this project includes foundations for the battery cubes; inverters and transformers; operational building; and associated water infrastructure, such as cable canals, streets and landscaping.

We are very proud to contribute with this iconic project to Germany´s national energy transition strategy.
