Newly-Appointed Construction Unit President Peter Tunnicliffe Named Water Design Build Council’s First Director Emeritus
October 18, 2017

BOSTON – At the Water Design Build Council’s Board and Advisors dinner on September 7, CDM Smith’s Executive Vice President Peter W. Tunnicliffe, PE, BCEE, DBIA, CIRM was awarded the Council’s first honorary title of Director Emeritus in recognition for his years of service to the council and the water industry.

This recent recognition comes just days after it was announced that Tunnicliffe will re-assume his role as president of the firm’s construction unit, a position he previously held from 1992 to 2001.

Tunnicliffe is one of the Water Design Build Council’s founding members and has served as past president and CDM Smith’s board designee. In 1992, he was the visionary who convinced CDM Smith to establish a wholly-owned subsidiary with its primary mission being design-build delivery. His leadership has been instrumental in the development of a forward-looking direction for collaborative delivery on behalf of the water design-build industry and its growing acceptance over the years.

With close to four decades of industry experience, Tunnicliffe has been responsible for the sales and delivery of projects in over 30 countries, as well as global sales management for the firm as a whole. His strategic efforts in the public, industrial, federal and international sectors have helped advance some of the firm’s largest projects to date. Tunnicliffe has been named the recipient of the several prestigious industry awards, including the Design-Build Institute of America’s Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award—the highest honor that the organization bestows upon an individual.

“It’s a great honor to receive this recognition from the Water Design Build Council,” says Tunnicliffe. “Design-build delivery has now advanced to the point where it is no longer consider ‘alternate’ project delivery; it’s now the delivery method of choice for many clients in the United States. At CDM Smith, we’ve led many of the design build projects in the water sector and we look forward to participating in the efforts to strengthen the U.S. water systems and infrastructure for the future.”

Chartered in 2006, the Water Design-Build Council is a 501(c)(6) non-profit corporation, established as an educational industry advocate for the value of collaborative delivery methods for water and wastewater infrastructure projects; and to promote best practices in design-build and CMAR procurement and implementation through education and outreach.

CDM Smith provides lasting and integrated solutions in water, environment, transportation, energy and facilities to public and private clients worldwide. As a full-service engineering and construction firm, we deliver exceptional client service, quality results and enduring value across the entire project life cycle.
