Ecosystem Restoration Leader Dr. Larry Schwartz Rejoins CDM Smith
ORLANDO—CDM Smith is pleased to announce that Larry N. Schwartz, PhD, PWS, has returned to the firm as a wetland and ecosystem restoration expert. Schwartz is an environmental scientist with more than three decades of experience in wetland systems ecology, ecosystem restoration, wetland treatment system design, water quality assessment and permit acquisition activities.
For the past 4 years, Schwartz coordinated the development and implementation of the State of Florida’s $55 million Science Plan for the Everglades Stormwater Treatment Areas to optimize performance of the largest treatment wetlands in the world. Prior to leading the Science Plan, Schwartz provided key leadership and innovation for some of the most significant wetland restoration projects in CDM Smith’s history, including the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Lake Okeechobee Fast Track (LOFT) project in support of Everglades restoration, the Blind River Freshwater Diversion project to restore coastal wetlands in Louisiana, and the first large-scale wetlands-based indirect potable reuse system, located in West Palm Beach, Florida.
“Larry is a true champion of the industry,” says Brian Mack, CDM Smith vice president. “As CDM Smith continues to expand our ecosystem restoration services in impacted coastal areas, and provide resiliency to recover from future cataclysmic events, we’re looking forward to once again utilizing Larry’s expertise, experience and leadership skills.”
“The economic impact of storm damage and environmental catastrophes in Louisiana and Florida have been astounding. This is a vital region that needs our help. Restoring and stabilizing coastal environments to reduce future impacts supports both ecosystem and economic restoration,” says Schwartz. “It’s exciting to be back at a firm that has a hand in rebuilding the community. CDM Smith is getting it done and getting it done right.”
