CDM Smith's Construction Unit Celebrates 25 Years of Industry Leadership
June 13, 2017

BOSTON – CDM Constructors Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of CDM Smith, will celebrate 25 years of operation on June 16, 2017. Incorporated in 1992, CDM Constructors Inc. has grown to be a premier and industry-leading construction company specializing in design-build, as well as one of the Engineering News-Record (ENR) Top 400 Contractors worldwide.

CDM Smith’s construction division was born out of the vision and foresight of Peter Tunnicliffe and his fellow executive leaders in response to the anticipated market shift to design-build delivery. At its inception, CDM Constructors Inc. was staffed with only eight employees. But by the mid-1990s, the organization gained notable growth through acquisition in strategic locations to meet the needs of clients throughout the project life cycle. As a CECO company (consulting, engineering, construction, and operations) with expert capabilities in those areas, CDM Smith became a truly integrated team.

Thanks to increased opportunities in the public, federal and industrial markets, CDM Constructors Inc. was able to pursue large, major opportunities without the need for partners or additional financial strength. And because of its focus on smart growth, improved profitability, technical supremacy and a reinvestment in the future, CDM Constructors Inc. has continued to be recognized as a leader in the evolving alternative delivery market. Notable projects include the $1.2 billion Northeast Water Purification Plant (NEWPP) expansion for the city of Houston, a zero liquid discharge facility for the J.R. Simplot Company, and the Delta Water Reclamation project for the city of Stockton, CA. Other noteworthy projects include major infrastructure work for the Army Corps, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force in the United States and overseas.

CDM Constructors Inc. has contributed to the construction industry by supporting and encouraging team members to participate in leadership organizations. Founding President Peter Tunnicliffe was the recent recipient of the DBIA 2016 Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award and his successor, Paul Shea, served as President of Engineers Without Borders USA during his tenure. Tom McNeice, the unit’s current president, has been a driving force behind its overseas expansion and is currently working to increase the firm’s collaborative delivery efficiency in response to an increasingly competitive economy.

“CDM Smith took the time to invest in design-build in its infancy and set up a group dedicated to supporting clients with a single point of responsibility from design through construction," says McNeice. “That investment has blossomed into a business model that successfully delivers very challenging projects for our clients.”

Throughout its 25 years of operation, CDM Constructors Inc. has held an unwavering dedication to promoting a culture of safety, quality and teamwork. Please join us in congratulating CDM Constructors Inc. for 25 years of construction success.

CDM Smith provides lasting and integrated solutions in water, environment, transportation, energy and facilities to public and private clients worldwide. As a full-service engineering and construction firm, we deliver exceptional client service, quality results and enduring value across the entire project life cycle.
