CDM Smith to Support Missouri’s Water Plan Update
KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The state of Missouri is embarking on an update to the Missouri Water Resources Plan over the next 2 years. The plan is a long-range, comprehensive strategy to provide an understanding of Missouri’s water resource needs. The state’s 6 million residents depend on well-managed water resources, not only for potable water but also to support agriculture, outdoor recreation, and industry.
The Missouri Water Resources Plan will help to identify future shortfalls in water supplies, and explore options to address those water needs. This may include project recommendations such as new infrastructure development, regionalization of water use, integration of water supplies and the pursuit of financial assistance opportunities.
CDM Smith is supporting the state in updating the plan, with tasks including:
- Developing an updated evaluation of current groundwater and surface water availability
- Producing an in-depth analysis of current and future water needs for water use sectors such as municipal, agricultural, industrial, recreational, and commercial navigation
- Identifying gaps in water availability based on water use needs through 2060
- Recognizing multiple impacts on water availability
- Identifying water and wastewater infrastructure needs and evaluating funding and financing opportunities
- Meeting with the Interagency Task Force, an advisory group for the development and implementation of the water plan, as well as with technical workgroups focused on consumptive water needs, non-consumptive water needs, agricultural needs, infrastructure needs, and water quality
- Gathering public and stakeholder input to help identify water resource needs and priorities
- Understanding areas where developing new and more sustainable water sources, better infrastructure, and more integrated water supplies can help to sustain water and delivery into the future
“As an engineering firm in Missouri, CDM Smith is excited to be supporting MoDNR and USACE on this update, which will provide the citizens of Missouri a road map to managing their water resources to meet future needs,” says CDM Smith vice president Jackie M. Mosher, PE, BCEE, PMP.
CDM Smith experts in Kansas City, Missouri, Carbondale, Illinois and Denver, Colorado will work with staff at the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the US Army Corps of Engineers in updating the plan. The project team anticipates that the plan update will be completed by late 2019.
