USAID strengthens energy access across Pakistan with sustainable power investments

Pakistan’s long-running energy crisis created severe outages, high distribution losses, and major barriers for vulnerable communities. Although generation capacity grew rapidly after 2014, system gaps persisted, limiting service quality and reliability. To address these challenges, USAID launched major investments in hydroelectric and renewable energy. Through the Energy Infrastructure Monitoring Services (EIMS) project, CDM Smith is providing third-party monitoring to ensure these facilities are built safely, efficiently, and in full compliance.

Monitor major power upgrades

Under EIMS, the team reviews construction, inspects works, and verifies adherence to technical, environmental, safety, and social requirements. .

Improve hydro station output

Monitoring at Tarbela ensured successful upgrades that added 20 MW to the grid, powering 150,000 people and extending the station’s performance.

Support new clean energy supply

Oversight at Kaitu Weir and Kurram Tangi adds 18.4 MW and expands irrigation to 16,380 acres, improving both energy access and agricultural resilience.

Advance large-scale rehabilitation

At Mangla Dam, monitoring of eight power units supports a 300-MW increase and extends the dam’s useful life by 30 years, benefitting over 2.2 million people

Across Pakistan, USAID-funded initiatives supported by CDM Smith are delivering over 485 MW of renewable energy and improving access for 4.5 million people. Field teams navigated remote terrain and security constraints to provide timely reporting and coordination. “CDM Smith is proud to be part of these initiatives to increase the country’s power generation capacity through reliable and sustainable sources,” said Mohammad Tufail. These efforts are helping stabilize supply, reduce outages, and spur economic growth.
