CDM Smith has recently completed a project to provide technical assistance to prepare integrated water projects in Turkey. Our experts lead a multidisciplinary team in preparing water and wastewater infrastructure master plans, feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, environmental impact assessments, designs and tender packages for each of seven municipalities across Turkey.

Under the € 3.7 million contract, CDM Smith lead a multidisciplinary team of experts in preparing integrated water projects for Bandırma (Balıkesir), Rize, Giresun, Çankırı, Niksar (Tokat), Kırşehir and Kastamonu. As part of an extensive Turkish programme to meet crucial water management needs, the project formed an important step in enhancing environmental protection and water resources management. The successful completion of the project means that approximately 1 million people across the north and centre of the country will benefit from the improved water situation.

From our office in Ankara, we began our part in the 5-year project in 2013 with the development of seven masterplans spanning the next 30 years. The masterplans covered the selection (and phasing) of relevant improvement projects and provided the foundation for seven feasibility studies, taking environmental, legal and socioeconomic factors alongside technical and financial aspects into account. From there, we drew up the corresponding EU funding applications and concept plans for water supply and wastewater networks as well as wastewater treatment plants. The final stage in the project was the production of water and wastewater system construction tender packages coverings works including reservoirs, pumping stations, networks and wastewater treatment plants.

Improving the water management cycle is one of several targets in the operative environmental programme promoting regional development in Turkey. The European Union provided the funds from the EU Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance for the programme. The fund supports economic and social development in potential EU membership candidates while raising infrastructure quality to the EU standards.
